Parliament Monsoon Session LIVE: Hello and welcome to the live blog on the Parliament's monsoon session.
Today is the last day of the monsoon session of Parliament. The session began on July 20 and witnessed massive mayhem inside both Houses over the Manipur issue. The opposition was steady in its demand for a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi inside Parliament. The opposition parties also moved a no-confidence motion against the Centre over the violence and viral video incident in Manipur.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court stayed the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in the 'Modi surname' case and the Lok Sabha secretariat later restored his membership.
Speaking on the no-confidence motion, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched an all-out attack on BJP and hit out at the Modi government over the Manipur violence.
“You are putting the entire country in flames. First, it was Manipur, now it is Haryana. You want to burn the whole country," Gandhi said in his no-trust vote speech in Lok Sabha.
Taking a dig at PM Modi, he said, "PM Modi doesn't listen to India's voice... Raavan used to listen to just two persons — Meghnad and Kumbhakarna. Similarly, PM Modi listens to only Amit Shah and [Gautam] Adani."
Countering Rahul Gandhi’s remarks, Union Minister Smriti Irani began her speech against the no-confidence motion, saying that the Opposition must "quit India". Commenting on the Opposition alliance's nomenclature, she said that these parties were not INDIA as India is against corruption and dynastic politics.
"You are not India, for India is not corrupt. India believes in merit not in dynasty and today of all the days, people like you need to remember what was told to the British - Quit India. Corruption quit India, Dynasty quit India. Merit now finds a place in India,” Irani said.
In his reply to the motion on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra assured that peace would be soon restored in Manipur, which has been in the grip of ethnic violence for more than three months as a result of clashes between Metieis and Kukis. Modi’s remark came as he spoke on the no-confidence motion brought against his government by the Opposition in the Lok Sabha over the issue of Manipur. He said that central and state governments are doing everything possible, adding the accused will get the strictest punishment.
"Both the state and central governments are doing everything possible to ensure that the accused get the strictest punishment. I want to assure the people that peace will be restored in Manipur in the coming time. I want to tell the people of Manipur including women and daughters of Manipur that the country is with you,” he said in the Lower House of Parliament.
