Trouble For People As Truck, Bus Drivers Continue Protest Against New Law On Hit And Run Cases

To prevent any further chaos, the Maharashtra government has requested police to ensure a smooth supply of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders in the market

Truck Driver Strike: Transport associations, truck and bus drivers have blocked highways as they protest against new penal law against hit-and-run cases interrupting the fuel supply at petrol pumps and leading to traffic jams. Under the recently formed law Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the colonial era Indian Penal Code, drivers who cause a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away without informing the police or any official from the administration can face punishment of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs 7 lakh, reported PTI.

Long queues were seen at petrol pumps in Nagpur as well as in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

To prevent any further chaos, the Maharashtra government has requested police to ensure a smooth supply of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders in the market. As per the news agency, the Maharashtra Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Protection Department has written a letter to all police commissioners and superintendents of police expressing concern about the stir and its effect on the supply of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders.

Meanwhile, the state level coordinator (oil industry) has urged the Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Protection Department to intervene to resolve the ongoing impasse. Notably, the strikes began on New Year's day on Monday across many states in the country.

In Bhopal, commuters face inconvenience due to jammed roads amid transport drivers' protests.
