Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto To Be Chief Guest For India's 76th Republic Day Celebration

India will celebrate its 76th Republic Day on January 26, 2025, with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expected to be the chief guest. PM Modi and Subianto will hold talks during the visit.

India will be celebrating its 76th Republic Day on January 26, 2025, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to be the chief guest this year, people familiar with the matter said this on Saturday as reported by PTI.

However, India is yet to formally announce this year's Republic Day chief guest. Normally, the announcement about the Republic Day chief guest is made a few months in advance.

As per the details, it is also learnt that President Subianto may not travel to Pakistan immediately after concluding his trip to India after New Delhi raised the issue. “The Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will not travel to Pakistan after he visits New Delhi,” people familiar with the matter told ThePrint. One person in the loop said there would be no Pakistan visit during Prabowo’s India visit for Republic Day.

Pakistani media had earlier reported that Indonesian President has planned a trip to India's neighbouring country Pakistan after his visit to New Delhi.

It is believed that India has raised the issue with Indonesia stating not to combine a visit to New Delhi and Islamabad. Prabowo, as per the plan, has to visit Islamabad directly from New Delhi on the same day on January 26. India has been encouraging leaders not to combine a visit to New Delhi and Islamabad.

During Subianto's visit to India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold wide-ranging talks with the Indonesian President.

As per the tradition, India invites world leaders to attend the Republic Day celebration every year. While, in 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron graced the occasion as a chief guest for the Republic Day, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was invited for the occasion in 2023.

In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no Republic Day Chief guest in 2021 and 2022. For 2021, then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson was invited. However, the visit was cancelled due to a spike in Covid19 cases in the UK.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was the chief guest at the Republic Day celebration in 2020, while in 2019, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was the chief guest at the Republic Day parade.

In 2018, leaders of all 10 ASEAN countries attended the event.

Other world leaders who attended the Republic Day celebrartion includes, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (in 2017), former French President Francois Hollande (in 2016) and then US President Barack Obama (in 2015).
