Gandhi Jayanti 2022: PM Modi, VP Dhankhar Attends Prayer Meet Organised At Gandhi Smriti

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar both joined the prayer meeting held at Gandhi Smriti on Sunday in honour of Gandhi Jayanti, news agency ANI reported.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Lala Lajpat Rai at Rajghat and Vijay Ghat, respectively.

PM Modi tweeted, "This Gandhi Jayanti is, even more, special because India marks Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. I also urge you to purchase Khadi and handicrafts products as tribute to Gandhi Ji."

President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversary on Sunday. Both Murmu and Dhankhar visited Rajghat, the final resting place of Gandhi, and later Vijay Ghat, the memorial of Shastri, in Delhi.

Gandhi's birth anniversary is commemorated worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence, highlighting his nonviolent approach to bringing about social or political change. To commemorate the occasion, numerous events are held throughout India and around the world.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a leader in the freedom struggle against British colonial control. He was born on October 2, 1869, in the Gujarati town of Porbandar.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was born in Uttar Pradesh in 1904, was India's second Prime Minister, serving from 1964 to 1966. He died on January 11, 1966, in Tashkent, at the age of 61, shortly after signing the Tashkent Pact with Pakistan.
