Congress To File Review Petition In Supreme Court Against Release Of Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Convicts

Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case: The party sources stated that the petition would be submitted this week.

The Congress would ask the Supreme Court for a review of the decision to free six defendants in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the party sources stated on Monday, news agency PTI reported.

They stated that the petition would be submitted this week.

A party insider stated, "A fresh review application challenging the Supreme Court decision to release the convicts on the grounds set out in the order will be filed on behalf of the party," PTI reported.

Earlier last week, the government petitioned the Supreme Court for a reconsideration of its ruling for the early release of the convicts in the case after receiving criticism from the Congress.

Accordinf to PTI, the Centre had said the order was passed without affording it adequate opportunity for hearing despite it being a necessary party to the case. It also highlighted the alleged procedural lapse, saying the convicts seeking remission did not formally implead the Centre as a party which resulted in its non-participation in the case.

On November 11, the Supreme Court issued an order directing the early release of the six convicts, including R P Ravichandran and Nalini Sriharan, whom was given life sentences in the case. It said that the Tamil Nadu government has that their sentence be commuted.

The four other people that were freed in addition to Nalini and Ravichandran were Santhan, Murugan, Robert Payas, and Jayakumar.

The supreme court also considered the fact that their behaviour while incarcerated was acceptable.
