The Government of India has appointed Advocate Narendra Mann as Special Public Prosecutor for the 26/11 attack case hearing. A gazette notification has also been issued.

The development comes as the Mumbai terror attack case accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana will arrive in India today. He will reportedly land in Delhi and is likely to be lodged in a high-security ward in Tihar jail after being extradited from the US.

Necessary preparations have been made for lodging him in jail, news agency PTI reported, quoting prison sources.

The 64-year-old Pakistan-born Canadian national is a close associate of one of the main conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen.

A multi-agency team has gone to the US to bring him to India, news agency PTI reported citing officials.

Rana is being brought to India after his final attempt to evade extradition failed after the US Supreme Court justices rejected his application.

On November 26, 2008, a group of 10 Pakistani terrorists went on a rampage, carrying out a coordinated attack on a railway station, two luxury hotels and a Jewish centre, after they infiltrated into India's financial capital Mumbai using the sea route in the Arabian Sea. As many as 166 people were killed in the nearly 60-hour assault that sent shockwaves across the country.

Rana's Extradition Announced By Trump During PM Modi's US Visit 

US President Donald Trump, during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Modi in the White House in February, had announced his administration's decision to approve the extradition of "very evil" Tahawwur Rana, who is wanted by Indian law enforcement agencies for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, "to face justice in India".

The India-US joint statement issued during the PM Modi's US noted that both the leaders reaffirmed that the global surge of terrorism must be fought against and that terrorist safe havens must be eliminated from every corner of the world.

"Recognising a shared desire to bring to justice those who would harm our citizens, the US announced that the extradition to India of Tahawwur Rana has been approved. The leaders further called on Pakistan to expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai, and Pathankot attacks and ensure that its territory is not used to carry out cross-border terrorist attacks," the joint statement read.
