In the middle of a very bad auto market, India's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India has announced a one day production shut-down at its two plants at Gurgaon and Manesar on Friday. The decision is taken just ahead of a six-day scheduled maintenance closure of the manufacturing units later this month.

Speaking to TOI, the Maruti Suzuki India spokesperson said that the one day shut-down of the facilities on Friday is a measure to adjust the production to market demand. The manufacturing units will also remain closed on June 8 for a scheduled holiday. "The scheduled maintenance shutdown (of the two plants) is from June 17 to June 22," the spokesperson said.
The shut-down comes in the time when the automobile market is continuously going through a very bad phase. Maruti Suzuki India registered a negative growth of 14.4 per cent in its total sales in May this year at 84,677 units. Moreover, the company also reported a decline of 13 per cent in its domestic sales at 77,821 units as against 89,478 units in May, 2012. MSI has been producing 5,000 units per day from the two manufacturing plants.
