5 Myths You Need To Know About Collagen And Skincare

Collagen is a protein that connects tissues by forming a fibrous structure.

Collagen-based serums and creams that assure skin tightening are popular, but their effects are temporary. This is because collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the outermost layer of the skin (the epidermis). Moreover, peptides, a trending ingredient, shows results, but more research is needed to understand its effectiveness.

But what is collagen? To explain this, Seeza Bhardwaj who is the founder of The Green Loom said, "Collagen is a protein that connects tissues by forming a fibrous structure. As we age, our collagen breaks down, affecting the strength and thickness of our skin. Unfortunately, our bodies produce less collagen as we grow older."

"Collagen is essential for smooth and firm skin. As we age naturally, many lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep, an unhealthy diet, and stress may accelerate the signs of ageing. There is an enticing notion that taking collagen supplements can reverse ageing, but it is critical to analyze the facts," she added.

Collagen based serums and creams:

Talking about this, Seeza Bhardwaj said, "Most creams, serums, and oils primarily provide moisture and hydration to the skin, reducing the visibility of fine lines. It's important to acknowledge that achieving healthy skin requires effort. Using collagen serums or supplements in your 40s and 50s to reverse ageing isn't a wise strategy. Instead, focus on keeping your body hydrated and moisturised. Embrace a diet rich in fresh foods, prioritise adequate sleep, and practice meditation for a natural 'collagen boost."

Myths Related To Collagen And Skincare:

Dr Ruby Sachdev who is a Consultant Aesthetic Physician & Founder of Skinfit Medspa at Gleneagles Hospitals Richmond, Bengaluru said, "As an aesthetic physician, I'm often confronted with misconceptions about collagen and its relationship with skincare. It's time to set the record straight. Collagen, a key structural protein, is a hot topic in the world of beauty and anti-aging, but let's demystify some common myths."

Myth 1: Collagen Supplements Reverse Ageing

The efficacy of collagen supplements is still debated. Healthy eating remains the most reliable way to stimulate collagen production. Supplements may complement your diet, but don't expect them to work miracles on their own.

Myth 2: Collagen Eliminates Wrinkles Instantly

Collagen improves skin texture and elasticity but isn't a quick fix for wrinkles. Immediate results require treatments like dermal fillers or Botox. Collagen-boosting methods, such as micro needling and laser therapy, demand patience.

Myth 3: All Collagen Products Are Equal (oral, topical & drinks)

Collagen products vary in type and source. Marine collagen, with its smaller particles, may be more absorbable than other sources. Quality matters, so do your research when choosing collagen supplements or skincare.

Myth 4: Collagen Alone Stops Ageing

Collagen is crucial, but it's not the sole answer. A holistic approach to skincare involves sun protection, a balanced diet, hydration, and proper cleansing. Healthy lifestyle choices, such as not smoking and managing stress, significantly affect skin health.

Myth 5: Applying collagen topically will result in more collagen stimulation in the body

Aditi Sahu, who is the VP - Product Development, Foxtale said, "This is the biggest myth and misconception when it comes to collagen and skincare. The skin cannot absorb collagen. The molecule of topical collagen is too large to penetrate the skin and therefore cannot work on inner layers to stimulate collagen synthesis or growth. So any collagen you apply will sit on the surface of your skin and offer no incremental benefit whatsoever."
