Wayanad Student Death: Kerala Govt Decides To Hand Over Probe To CBI

The statement noted that Kerala CM assured them that the ongoing police investigation had resulted in arrest of all suspects through a thorough and impartial inquiry into Wayanad student death case.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of JS Sidharthan, a second-year veterinary student in Pookkode, Wayanad on Saturday. The CM issued the order after the family of the victim met the Chief Minister at his office.

A statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said, the father and relatives of the student -- 20-year-old Sidharthan J S -- came to meet Vijayan and demanded to hand over the case to the CBI.

The statement noted that the CM assured them that the ongoing police investigation had resulted in the arrest of all suspects through a thorough and impartial inquiry. Despite this, acknowledging the victim's mother's request for a CBI investigation, Vijayan informed the family of his decision to hand over the case to the CBI, respecting their sentiments.

The victim's father told reporters that the suspension of the Dean of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Pookode in Wayanad district and the assistant warden of the hostel, where Sidharthan passed away, was insufficient.

"They should be dismissed from service and should also face legal action," he demanded, as per a report on PTI.

On Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan ordering CBI inquiry in Sidharthan death case, Congress leader VD Satheesan said, "Unfortunately the police investigation was unfair because the police knew the matter... Even then the police suppressed the facts... and the party itself tried to save all the criminals from this case. So, we have been demanding a CBI investigation."
