When Aamir Khan Saw Amitabh Bachchan Rehearsing His Lines '100, 200 Times'

At the ABP Network's Ideas of India Summit, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan took a trip down memory lane to recount an incident from the early days of his career during the filming of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

Ideas Of India 3.0: At the ABP Network's Ideas of India Summit, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan took a trip down memory lane to recount an incident from the early days of his career during the filming of his debut movie 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. During a session titled 'Telling Laapataa Tales: Scenes from an Invisible Nation' on the inaugural day of the third edition of ABP Network’s Ideas of India Summit, Aamir Khan shared an anecdote from the early days of his career that made him believe in the significance of rehearsals.

While conversing about their upcoming film 'Laapataa Ladies', Kiran Rao, who has directed the film, discussed the meticulous preparations undertaken for the project. Kiran Rao emphasised the importance of rehearsals and workshops to ensure a uniform comedic tone among the actors, stating, "We did a lot of rehearsals and workshops because everyone should be at the same level for the humour to pop in a comedy. We were quite ready."

The conversation around rehearsals led to Aamir narrating an anecdote during the shoot of his debut film 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak' where he saw megastar Amitabh Bachchan rehearsing a lot for his scene during a shoot.

"I was shooting for Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak at Film City. I was in the makeup room with my cousin Nusat, Raj Zutshi and Reena (Aamir's ex-wife). Outside the makeup room, the shooting of another film was underway. We could hear an actor rehearsing his lines almost 100,200 times. Intrigued by the actor's dedication, I went outside to discover that the hardworking artist was none other than Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan). At that time, as a newcomer to the industry, witnessing a superstar like Amitji rehearse so extensively, work so diligently, and maintain such focus left a lasting impression on me. It was a long scene and he gave 8 to 10 takes. After the shot concluded, Amit ji approached director Prakash Mehra, seeking feedback: 'Prakash, I didn't speak too fast, did I?' It was a lesson for me that there is no end to rehearse. Even iconic figures like Charlie Chaplin, one of the greatest actors in history, used to rehearse 200 to 300 times. So, I believe in rehearsing and being prepared," he narrated the incident.

Adding to the conversation, Kiran Rao pointed out the diversity in actors' methods of preparation, stating that the approach often varies based on the role. She reminded Aamir about his minimal rehearsal approach for her directorial debut film 'Dhobi Ghat,' highlighting the actor's immersive preparation method by residing in the house where his character lived.

Aamir Khan is called 'Mr Perectionist' and is known for his preparations he put into his roles and films.
