Richa Chadha Says She Was Offered Bigger Part In Heeramandi But She Picked Lajjo: 'Get Accused Of Playing...'

Heeramandi The Diamond Bazaar: Richa Chadha, who recently starred in ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar', revealed that she was offered a different role.

Heeramandi The Diamond Bazaar: Actor Richa Chadha, who recently starred in the new Netflix series ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar', is earning plaudits for her work. Richa revealed that she was offered a different role in the Sanjay Leela Bhanslai-directed web series, but she selected the character of Lajjo.

Richa Chadha shares why she picked Lajjo's character in Heeramandi

Richa Chadha said that she picked Lajjo because of the character's tragic narrative in the period drama, even though she was offered a role with longer screen time. She also added that she felt a resemblance between her character and Meena Kumari from ‘Pakeezah’.

Sharing the reason behind picking her role in ‘Heeramandi’, Richa said, "When I was approached for 'Heeramandi', at the time Sanjay was the showrunner, and I had been offered another part, the one with more screen time for sure. But because an actor also needs to see what's in here that's new for me, I chose Lajjo."

She added, “I have experimented with characters that have a grey shade, like Bholi Punjaban or Tara in ‘Madam Chief Minister’. Basically, I get accused of playing only empowered characters, so I felt the need to break that stereotype and surprise the audience. I wanted to play a part of a hopeless romantic and leave the audience with gooseflesh. That's exactly what's happening. People are calling me in tears.”

The actor also disclosed that when the director asked her to check out the character of Lajjo, she was instantly drawn to the role.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi review

The ABP Live review of the series reads: In the eight-part series, Bhansali makes an effort to give each of the parallel stories enough attention but it may get a little difficult for viewers to follow at times. But he tries to make up for it with the visual extravaganza on screen and scenes filled with his trademark opulent sets, ornate costumes, and over-the-top adaa. The main story of power struggle play between Mallika Jaan and Fareedan is what keeps you hooked to the screen until the second phase begins. And one has to give credit to Manisha Koirala and Sonakshi Sinha’s performance for holding the fort till another interesting twist pops up in the story.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut series, ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar', is streaming on Netflix.
