Vikrant Massey Says He Received Death Threats For The Sabarmati Report; Equates Godhra Train Incident With 9/11

Actor Vikrant Massey shared he has received death threats on social media due to his role in the upcoming film ‘The Sabarmati Report’, which is based on the aftermath of the 2002 Godhra train incident.

Actor Vikrant Massey shared he has received death threats on social media due to his role in the upcoming film ‘The Sabarmati Report’, which is based on the aftermath of the 2002 Godhra train incident. Despite the online backlash, Massey expressed confidence in the film, saying it’s grounded in factual events.

The thriller, directed by Dheeraj Sarna and produced by Ektaa R Kapoor, features Massey as a local journalist and also stars Ridhi Dogra and Raashii Khanna.

Vikrant Massey says he got death threats

Speaking at the film’s trailer launch, Massey acknowledged the threats he has faced but downplayed any alarm, noting that he and the team are handling it together. "I have been receiving threats. Without drawing attention to it, it is something which I am dealing with and we, as a team, collectively are dealing with," he was quoted as saying by PTI.

Addressing concerns about the film’s portrayal of the 2002 Gujarat riots, Massey clarified, “We are artists, and we tell stories. This film is purely based on facts. Unfortunately, you have not seen the film, so you should not make a preconceived notion that it is talking about only one facet."

Reflecting on the film’s themes, Massey drew a parallel between the Godhra incident and the September 11 attacks in the US.

"This was our 9/11 which changed our socio-political fabric overnight," he remarked, highlighting how the incident marked a turning point for India.

Ekta Kapoor on the film

Producer Ektaa R Kapoor also addressed questions about the film’s focus on a single perspective, asserting that the movie explores the origins of the events without diminishing other viewpoints.

"This is not just one facet, but the first facet. We are telling the genesis of this first facet without undermining the other facets," she explained.

Kapoor described The Sabarmati Report as a “social commentary” when asked about the potential for it to incite communal tensions.

She said, “I am Hindu, and I believe being Hindu means you are secular. I would never make a comment against any religion. You need to see the film. But at the same time, I will name the perpetrators too, without harming any religion. That's the beauty of a storyteller.”

Kapoor also assured that there was no political influence behind the film’s creation. She pointed out that the movie is independently produced and hasn’t sought support from any political group.

"I have not spoken to any politician or taken support of anyone. I am not with any wing,” she said, underlining the neutrality of the film.

Vikrant Massey on his association with Ekta Kapoor

Massey, fresh off the success of '12th Fail', shared his long-standing association with Ektaa Kapoor, who gave him his first big screen break in 'Lootera' (2013).

“This is our eighth project together, and this time it is all the more special... I resonate with everything we have said in The Sabarmati Report,” Massey added.

The Sabarmati Report, also produced by Shobha Kapoor, Amul V Mohan, and Anshul Mohan, is set to release in theatres on November 15.
