Hansal Mehta Gives Sarcastic Reply To Fan Who Called Rajkummar Rao Starrer 'Omerta' Career Defining: 'Nobody Watched It'

Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao have delivered critically acclaimed films like Shahid and Aligarh, establishing themselves as a successful director-actor duo.

Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao have delivered critically acclaimed films like Shahid and Aligarh, establishing themselves as a successful director-actor duo. However, not all of their collaborations have achieved the same level of recognition.

One such example is their 2017 crime drama Omerta, which did not find a wide audience despite Rajkummar’s intense performance. When a fan recently praised the film as “career-defining,” the filmmaker had a candid response.

What Hansal Said

On Wednesday evening, an X user shared a poster of Omerta and wrote, “Hidden Gem Alert 🔔 Witness @RajkummarRao in a career-defining performance in @MehtaHansal's #Omerta 🔥 Streaming on @PrimeVideoIN @JioCinema & @Zee5India 📺.”

Hansal reposted the tweet with a tongue-in-cheek remark, saying, “So career defining that nobody watched the film. So career defining that neither of us have made a film like this again. Career defining indeed.”

Another X user echoed Hansal’s sentiments, pointing out how Omerta never got a wide theatrical release despite being one of Rajkummar’s finest performances. “One of @RajkummarRao's best work till date. Loved the movie, but yes, watched it on OTT, couldn’t find a screen showing it in Sydney at the time of release,” they wrote.

Another fan shared a similar experience: “I remember I had travelled 10-12 kms from my college to a small multiplex to watch this, but when I reached, they said that the show had been cancelled because of no audience.”

Some users appreciated Hansal’s humorous take on the situation. “Haha, love it when accomplished people have self-deprecating humor about their art,” commented one.

Another fan acknowledged the film’s commercial struggle but praised Hansal and Rajkummar’s work: “Yeah, I know that these movies tanked at the box office, but I have seen Omerta and Shahid, and I really loved the work you and @RajkummarRao did. Best director-actor jodi!"

Another user recalled watching Omerta in an almost empty theater: “Yup, I saw it all alone in a theater in Goa. My dad and brother were forced to go watch a Marvel Avengers movie cuz bro was under 18.”

About Omerta

Omerta is based on the life of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British terrorist of Pakistani origin, responsible for orchestrating the 2002 murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Rajkummar Rao portrayed Omar in the film. Despite its gripping storyline and strong performances, the film managed to collect only ₹4.49 crore at the box office.
