Cuties: Why Netflix's Film Is Facing Backlash On Social Media? All You Need To Know

The hashtag #CancelNetflix trended on social media after French film 'Cuties' released on the OTT platform on September 9.

New Delhi: French movie ‘Cuties’ premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23. The coming-of-age comedy drama has been hogging all the limelight since its release on Netflix on September 9. While the flick was appreciated by the critics, it received flak on social media for allegedly ‘sexualising minors’. The film got poor online ratings on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes from the audience. She rebels against her conservative family after she is caught between her traditional values and internet culture. While the makers have maintained that they intend to criticise the hyper-sexualisation of pre-adolescent girls through their film, Twitterati doesn’t seem to agree with them. The movie has been embroiled into a controversy as the several people have accused it of promoting pedophilia. In an interview, the film’s director said that film deals on how ‘social media encourages young girls to objectify themselves' without releasing the after effects of it. The hashtag #CancelNetflix trended on social media as several users expressed their disappointment over the film’s content. Several subscribers said that film is meant for audience above 18 years of age but the story deals with an 11-year-old, who is seen twerking and doing other ‘sexual’ dance moves. Many people had signed a petition to demand the removal of ‘Cuties’ from the leading OTT platform. Netflix's response to 'Cuties' poster controversy  The streaming giant reacted to the criticism and issued a statement. “We're deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties. It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which won an award at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description,” Netflix said in a statement.
‘Cuties’ TRAILER The trailer of ‘Cuties’, which was unveiled on August 18, has received over 1.7 million dislikes. It has been watched over 9.8 million times. YouTube users have posted over 1.7 lakh comments on the trailer of the award-winning French film.
