Bhool Bhulaiyaa To Bhagam Bhag: Akshay Kumar Starrer Comedy Movies That Promise Endless Laughter

Watching Akshay Kumar thrash the goons in ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ was all okay, but those dry jokes did not land any laughs.

When one hears Akshay Kumar’s name now, they might instantly recall most of his films with social messages or some out-and-out action thrillers. However, if you ask some to rewind a decade back and think of the same actor, they will probably conjure up all the hilariously funny comedy movies that turned him from ‘Khiladi Kumar’ to our very own ‘Raju’. Any ‘Hera Pheri’ fan would get that, and if you aren’t one, don't click away just yet. You might not be a fan of Akshay’s comedy right now, but allow me a few moments to convince you to give his old films a chance. However, it is almost impossible that you have not bumped into Akshay Kumar starrer comedy flicks, but in case you have missed them, you are in for a treat.

The actor, who kicked off his career as an action hero, has circled back to the same zone after a couple of years. Watching him thrash the goons in ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ was all okay, but those dry jokes did not land any laughs. Witnessing Kumar struggle hard to generate some laughter was painful for the viewers.

Akshay has carved a niche for himself in the realm of comedy with his incredible comic timing and versatile performances in several films. Since we are feeling a little nostalgic and missing the old funny Akshay a bit more now, let's take a deep dive into some of his most remarkable comedy films that showcase his prowess as a comedic actor.

Hera Pheri

When it comes to the best of Akshay’s comedy films, one has to mention the Priyadarshan-directed Hera Pheri, which never gets old no matter how many times you watch it. The 2000 film redefined the genre in Bollywood. Akshay was seen as a street-smart character, Raju, which eventually became one of his most iconic roles. The comedy flick also starred Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. It was followed by a sequel, Phir Hera Pheri, released in 2006 with the same cast.

Welcome

Another film that has registered itself among the timeless comedies is Anees Bazmee’s Welcome. Starring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, the film focuses on Rajiv, an innocent man, caught between two gangsters. Besides Akshay, the film also stars Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, and Paresh Rawal, who add to the film's entertainment quotient.

Singh is Kinng

If you are looking for a slapstick comedy with colourful characters, you can pick this film to watch any day. Set against the backdrop of Punjab, the movie is filled with light-hearted humour and catchy music. Kumar’s endearing portrayal of Happy Singh can always make you laugh. And the ensemble cast of the film is a bonus.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa

The 2007 horror-comedy features Akshay Kumar as Dr. Aditya Shrivastav, a psychiatrist, who strikes a perfect blend of suspense and wit. The film revolves around an NRI couple who return to their ancestral house and witness supernatural occurrences. Bhool Bhulaiyaa seamlessly blends horror and humour with the captivating premise.

Khatta Meetha

The comedy-drama film directed by Priyadarshan stars Akshay Kumar and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles. It revolves around Sachin Tichkule (played by Akshay Kumar), a contractor dealing with corruption and his family dynamics. The political satire blends humour and drama pretty well. Although the film got mixed reviews, Akshay’s performance and the storyline were praiseworthy. The film also has brilliant supporting performances from Rajpal Yadav, Johnny Lever, and others.

Bhagam Bhag

The 2006 comedy film is about a theatre group led by Bunty (Akshay Kumar) and Champak Chaturvedi (Paresh Rawal). After a murder, the storyline devolves into chaos as their lives become entangled in a maze of confusion. The movie is still a favourite among lovers of Bollywood comedy because of its humorous writing and engaging acting.
