Prithviraj Sukumaran Shares Why Akshay Kumar Didn’t Take Any Payment After Selfiee's Box Office Failure

Akshay Kumar went through a rough patch at the box office, with both ‘Raksha Bandhan’ and ‘Ram Setu’ failing to perform well. The downturn continued into 2023, as his film ‘Selfiee’ also disappointed at the box office. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, the producer Prithviraj Sukumaran shared details about the fee Akshay Kumar took for the film.

Talking about his experience working with Akshay, Prithviraj revealed that the actor declined to take any fees for the project. He said, “I have produced a film with Akshay Kumar, sir. He did not take a single rupee. He only said, ‘If the film makes money, then I'll take my remuneration.’ The film did not do well, and he did not take any money.”

After ‘Selfiee’, Akshay Kumar's film ‘OMG 2’ marked a successful turn at the box office. However, his next four films once again failed to perform commercially.

Directed by Raj Mehta and produced by Dharma Productions, Magic Frames, Prithviraj Productions, and Cape of Good Films, ‘Selfiee’ is a remake of the Malayalam film ‘Driving Licence’. The comedy-drama stars Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in lead roles, with Nushrratt Bharuccha, Diana Penty, Mahesh Thakur, Meghna Malik, Abhimanyu Singh, and Adah Sharma in supporting roles. The film received a mix of negative and mediocre reviews and struggled at the box office, grossing just Rs 24.6 crore worldwide.

Akshay Kumar has an exciting slate ahead, with ‘Kesari Chapter 2’, co-starring Ananya Panday, releasing on April 18. He also has ‘Bhooth Bangla’ with Tabu and Paresh Rawal, as well as ‘Jolly LLB 3’, ‘Housefull 5’, and ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ lined up. On the other hand, Prithviraj Sukumaran will next star in his self-directed film ‘L2: Empuraan’, releasing on March 27, alongside Mohanlal. He is also shooting for SS Rajamouli's SSMB 29 with Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra.
