Kriti Sanon Remarks On Gender Disparity In Films: 'Budget Going For Male-Centric Film Is Insane'

Kriti Sanon explained why the producers are hesitant to fund a film that focuses on women.

Kriti Sanon, who was last seen in a heist comedy ‘Crew’, recently discussed gender disparity in the film industry. In an interview with Anupama Chopra on Film Companion, Kriti explained why the producers are hesitant to fund a film that focuses on women. She also mentioned that films mostly starring men get exorbitant sums of money for no apparent reason.

Kriti Sanon said, “When there is a film on women, people are still scared to put in the amount of money that they would have for the same story had it been men.”

Giving an example of her own film that starred three actresses (Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon), Kriti said, “This film (Crew) is not like a serious film, it's a comedy, entertaining-massy film. The same films don't get the kind of scale because people are sort of apprehensive to take the risk. Are these films going to get the money back or not? Are they going to pull in the same amount of audience?”

She continued, “When you see the budget going in for male-centric film, that's insane. The difference is huge and the difference in payment currently also is huge for actually no reason. It's not like that person has given a hit in the last so many years but why is the gap 10 times.”

Kriti tried to understand producers' point of view and said, “The problem is that even the producers say is a lot of the recovery actually happens with the digital satellite deals which sort of happened before the film actually releases. Before it kind of takes off. On digital and satellite, certain male-centric films actually do very well compared to a film about a girl. So, I think it is that difference. I'm hoping that it eventually changes. I'm hoping that people put in that much money.”

Kriti shared that ‘Crew’ was a change in the box office business. She said, “When I went to the theatre, it was houseful till the second row. I was like wow. It made my day. I was like this is a good change. This means it doesn't matter if it's a guy or a girl in the film, it's the story and what the film says or how entertaining it's seeming is what pulls the audience.”

Kriti Sanon On Turning A Producer

Kriti Sanon has turned a producer for the film ‘Do Patti’. She said, “I'm a learning producer. Yes, I have turned a producer and I'm going to try and get more films that I would love to make. To support stories that I feel should be made. Be more involved creatively other than just being an actor on set.”

She added, “It is a learning thing for me. I like being a newcomer in some field once in a while. I have learned everything as an actor on the job and now it felt like I wanted to shift the gear and I wanted to also learn other aspects of it.”
