Rajasthan Polls: Congress MLA And Candidate From Karanpur Dies During Treatment

Congress candidate for the upcoming Rajasthan polls and sitting MLA from Karanpur constituency, Gurmeet Singh Kooner died during treatment at AIIMS Delhi.

Congress party candidate for the upcoming Rajasthan Assembly polls from Karanpur constituency, Gurmeet Singh Kooner died during treatment at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences, said the party leaders in Jaipur on Wednesday, as per a PTI report. 

Kooner, who passed away at the age of 75 was a sitting MLA from Karanpur and was admitted to the Geriatric Medicine Ward of AIIMS on November 12 in the national capital. 

According to the death certificate issued by the hospital, Kooner died of sepsis with septic shock and renal disease, the PTI report stated, adding that he was also suffering from hypertension. 

Polls to the 200-member Rajasthan Legislative Assembly are scheduled to be held on November 25 in a single phase and the votes will be counted on December 3 along with Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, and Telangana.

Expressing condolences on his demise, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called it an irreparable loss for the party and politics of Rajasthan. 

In a post on X, Gehlot wrote: "I am deeply saddened by the news of the demise of Karanpur MLA and former minister Shri Gurmeet Singh Kooner. Despite being unwell for a long time, Shri Kooner was always striving for development work in his area. Kooner Saheb's demise is an irreparable loss for the Congress Party and the politics of Rajasthan." 

"I pray to God to give peace to the departed soul and courage to the family," the CM said. 

Kunner's son told news agency ANI that his mortal remains have been taken to their native place in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar. 

Kooner was elected to the Rajasthan Assembly from Karanpur seat in 2018 and had been previously representing the constituency in 1998 and 2008 Assembly polls.
