Punjab Election 2022: CM Charanjit Singh Channi Submits His Resignation To Governor, Accepts 'People's Mandate'
A cabinet meeting was scheduled for 11:30 am, after which Channi went to Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation. He lost both his seats in Punjab Election 2022.
New Delhi: After Congress' dismal show in Punjab assembly election 2022, the legislative process to hand over power in the state has begun. Today, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi submitted his resignation. However, his cabinet will continue until the new government is formed by AAP.
A Punjab cabinet meeting was held at 11:30 am today at Punjab Civil Secretariat, Chandigarh, following which Channi went to Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation from CM post to the Governor of state.
"I have given my resignation to the Governor. He told me and the cabinet to continue until the new Government is sworn in. I accept the people's mandate," Channi told reporters outside Raj Bhavan.
In the Punjab election 2022, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerged as a clear winner winning 92 seats. Ruling Congress can only wrest 18 assembly seats followed by Shiromani Akali Dal's 4 seats.

No party had won more than 90 seats in Punjab since 1962, thus, this is a historic victory for the Aam Aadmi Party.
From AAP, Bhagwant Mann is all set to become the new Chief Minister of Punjab.
"I humbly accept the verdict of the people of Punjab and Congratulate Aam Aadmi Party and their elected Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Ji for the victory. I hope they will deliver on the expectations of people," Channi tweeted after his loss.

Sitting Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi lost both the seats — Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur — that he contested from. Channi lost the Bhadaur seat by 37,000 votes to AAP candidate Labh Singh Ugoke, while he lost the Chamkaur Sahib seat by a margin of 7,000 votes.
