Lok Sabha Elections Phase 6 Highlights: Polling Concludes Across 6 States, 2 UTs With Total Turnout Of 58.86%

Background

Lok Sabha Elections Phase 6 2024 Highlights: Please follow the space for all the updates pertaining to the sixth and penultimate phase of the Lok Sabha elections that are being held on Saturday across 58 constituencies in six states and two Union territories. The polling covers all seven seats in Delhi and the Jangal Mahal region in West Bengal.

Phase 6 voting is also taking place in 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, all 10 seats in Haryana, eight seats each in Bihar and West Bengal, six seats in Odisha, four seats in Jharkhand, and one seat in Jammu and Kashmir. Simultaneously, polling is held for 42 assembly constituencies in Odisha.

Over 11.13 crore voters, comprising 5.84 crore male, 5.29 crore female, and 5,120 third-gender voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the sixth phase of polling in LS Elections. The Election Commission (EC) has deployed approximately 11.4 lakh polling officials across 1.14 lakh polling stations. With large parts of India experiencing a heatwave, the EC has directed election officials and state machineries to take adequate measures to manage the adverse impact of the hot weather.

Prominent candidates in this phase include Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Rao Inderjit Singh, and Krishan Pal Gurjar, BJP's Maneka Gandhi, Sambit Patra, Manohar Lal Khattar, and Manoj Tiwari, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, and Congress leaders Deepender Singh Hooda, Raj Babbar, and Kanhaiya Kumar.

The EC has urged voters to come out in greater numbers and vote with responsibility and pride, particularly reminding urban voters in Delhi, Gurugram, and Faridabad to participate and break the trend of urban apathy.

The fifth phase saw a voter turnout of 62.2 per cent in the 49 seats that went to polls on May 20.

In West Bengal, voting will be held in the tribal belt Jangal Mahal region, spanning five districts. This region, a hotspot for identity politics, sends eight representatives to the Lok Sabha. In the 2019 elections, the BJP won five of these seats, while the TMC secured three.

Soumendu Adhikari, brother of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, is contesting from Kanthi. In Tamluk, former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay is running on a BJP ticket against TMC's Debangshu Bhattacharya, known for composing the "Khela Hobe" song for the party in the 2021 assembly polls.

In Delhi, an interesting fight is on the cards with the BJP and the INDIA bloc partners in direct, one-on-one contests across all seven seats. This is the first time the AAP and Congress have fielded joint candidates against the BJP. The AAP is contesting four seats, while Congress has fielded candidates in three seats.

In Uttar Pradesh, notable candidates include BJP's Maneka Gandhi in Sultanpur, contesting against Samajwadi Party's Ram Bhual Nishad and BSP's Uday Raj Verma. In Azamgarh, incumbent MP Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua is hoping to retain his seat against Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav.

In Jharkhand, Congress's Yashaswini Sahay, daughter of former Union minister Subodh Kant Sahay, is contesting from Ranchi against BJP's Sanjay Seth. In Dhanbad, BJP's Dulu Mahato faces Congress's Anupama Singh.

Haryana is witnessing direct contests between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in most seats. Union ministers and former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar are among the prominent candidates.

In Jammu and Kashmir, multi-layer security arrangements have been put in place for the redrawn Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, which spans 18 assembly segments. Voting in this region was postponed due to adverse weather conditions, sparking allegations of favouritism.

Bihar will see 86 candidates contesting across eight seats, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) contesting in four constituencies, including Sheohar.

Six parliamentary constituencies in Odisha, along with 42 assembly seats, will also go to the polls on Saturday.
