Krishnanagar Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: BJP's Amrita Roy Leads, TMC's Mohua Maitra Trails In Early Trends

Krishnanagar Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Krishnanagar has emerged as a critical battleground in the ongoing elections in West Bengal, primarily due to the presence of Mahua Moitra

Krishnanagar Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Early trends show that BJP candidate in Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency Amrita Roy is leading against TMC candidate Mohua Maitra. CPM candidate SM Sadi is also in the fray.  It should be kept in mind that currently postal ballots are being counted and a better, surer picture will emerge when EVM votes are taken in the tally. These are very early trends as of now.

Krishnanagar has emerged as a critical battleground in the ongoing elections in West Bengal, primarily due to the presence of Mahua Moitra. This general category seat includes seven Assembly constituencies: Tehatta, Palashipara, Kaliganj, Nakashipara, Chapra, Krishnanagar Uttar, and Krishnanagar Dakshin in the Nadia district. Moitra, who previously left the Lok Sabha in disgrace following a cash-for-query scandal, aims to restore her reputation by defeating candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the CPI(M).

Historically, the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency has been a stronghold for the Communist Party, with the BJP winning only once in 1999. The TMC has secured this seat for the last three consecutive terms. Despite being part of the INDI Alliance, the TMC has decided to contest all 42 seats independently. The party, led by Mamata Banerjee, has given Moitra another opportunity to enter Parliament after her controversial disqualification last year, following allegations from BJP MP Nishikant Dubey that she asked targeted questions in exchange for gifts.

Moitra faces a formidable opponent in BJP's Amrita Roy, known as the 'Rajmata' (Queen Mother) of Krishnanagar. Roy, a direct descendant of the 18th-century King of Bengal, Raja Krishna Chandra Dev, is revered as the 'Rajmata of the Rajbari' (Queen Mother of the royal palace) in Krishnanagar. She joined the BJP and is making her Lok Sabha debut by challenging Moitra. The CPI(M), also part of the opposition INDIA bloc, has fielded SM Saadi, making the contest a triangular one.
