The stage is set for an intense political battle between the Aam Aadmi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Congress, which are gearing up for the crucial Delhi Assembly elections 2025. Although each constituency holds its own significance and voter bank, some important ones are critical in shaping the future of the parties contesting due to their historical importance, candidates’ prominence, and demographic trends.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is seeking a third consecutive term after two victories in the previous 2015 and 2020 polls. The BJP is also eager to wrest the Delhi chair from AAP, which it has been unsuccessful in, since 1998. Meanwhile, Congress, which ran the Delhi government from 1998-2013 under Sheila Dikshit, is also trying hard to stake their claim in this high-stakes contest.
Here’s a look at some of these constituencies and why they are important:
New Delhi
The New Delhi constituency is an important seat of power from where Arvind Kejriwal has always contested. This time too, he is contesting from the seat for a third win and is up against BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit, who is former CM Sheila Dikshit’s son.
In 2020, Kejriwal secured a massive victory as he won the New Delhi seat with a 21,687-vote lead. This year, the former CM is using AAP’s welfare schemes such as free water, electricity, and monthly allowances of Rs 2,100 for women, to ensure his vote bank remains loyal.
Kalkaji
Kalkaji is also turning out to be a fierce three-way battle between the AAP, BJP, and Congress. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi Singh (AAP) is up against Congress leader Alka Lamba and BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri. The constituency has over 1,90,000 voters and has gone to AAP in the last two elections. In the 2020 elections, CM Atishi won the seat against BJP's Dharambir Singh by a margin of 11,393 votes.
Malviya Nagar
Malviya Nagar, another key urban constituency, has been dominated by AAP candidate Somnath Bharti, who has consistently won the seat by securing over 50 percent of the vote share in the last three elections. This year, Bharti has been fielded against BJP’s Satish Upadhyay, a seasoned politician, and Congress’ Jitendra Kumar Kochar.
Ballimaran
With a significant Muslim population, the Ballimaran seat, which falls under the Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency, has been a stronghold for Muslim candidates. Banking on its grassroot network in this Assembly constituency, the AAP has once again fielded incumbent minister Imran Hussain. The AAP candidate is pitted against Congress veteran Haroon Yusuf and BJP’s Kamal Bagri. Yusuf has represented Ballimaran several times and was also part of Sheila Dikshit’s cabinet. BJP has fielded Bagri, who won the MCD election from the Ram Nagar seat in 2022, and has replaced Lata Sodhi, the BJP candidate from Ballimaran in 2020.
Okhla
From Okhla, the AAP has fielded Amanatullah Khan for the third consecutive time. Khan in 2020 as well as in 2015 defeated BJP Candidate Braham Singh with a margin of more 60,000 votes each time. The Congress has pitted Ariba Khan to contest against Amanatullah Khan.
Jangpura
The AAP has fielded Manish Sisodia from the Jangpura constituency. He will be making his debut in this seat after AAP candidate Praveen Kumar contested the same seat in 2015 and 2020 and won by over 15,000 votes in the previous polls. This move is being seen as AAP’s way of tackling anti-incumbency. Sisoda is fielded against Trvinder Singh Marwah and Congress candidate Farhad Suri.
Patparganj
The Patparganj constituency has been an AAP stronghold as it was won by party veteran Manish Sisodia in the last three elections. In the 2020 polls, Sisodia won with 70,163 votes. However, with Sisodia contesting Jangpura this time, the party has fielded teacher-turned-politician Awadh Ojha as its candidate. Ojha is up against BJP’s Ravinder Singh Negi and the Congress candidate Anil Chaudhary. Before the AAP made Patparganj its bastion, it was dominated by the Congress from 1998 to 2013.
Shakurbasti
Shakurbasti will witness a contest between senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Satyendar Jain and BJP leader Karnail Singh, the chief of its Delhi Mandir Prakoshth (temple cell). Jain has been emphasising the health and infrastructure-related achievements made by him during his previous tenures. Singh, on the other hand, is trying to woo voters through cultural and religious appeals.
Rohini
In Rohini, the BJP has fielded Vijender Gupta, a two-time winner, against AAP’s Pradeep Mittal. In the 2020 Delhi polls, the Rohini seat was won by Gupta with a margin of 12,000 votesm who is once again in the fray. Gupta’s victory margin in 2020 was 12,000 votes, but he faces a formidable challenge from AAP’s Pradeep Mittal. While the BJP is hoping to leverage Gupta’s experience, the AAP is focusing on narrowing the margin by luring voters with its welfare initiatives and door-to-door campaigns.
The voting for the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be held in a single phase on February 5, with the counting of votes to be held on February 8.
