On Tuesday, the first phase of polling took place in Chhattisgarh on 20 seats out of the 90-member Legislative Assembly. With 12 of the 20 seats located in Naxalite-affected Bastar division, the first phase of polls were marred with an IED blast and eight encounters between the Naxals and the security forces.
Amid Naxalite violence and a call for boycott, a provisional turnout of 71.48 per cent was recorded in the first phase of Chhattisgarh polls, said officials, according to PTI.
The second phase of polling in Chhattisgarh for the remaining assembly constituencies will now take place on November 17.
Mizoram also underwent voting along with Chhattisgarh on Tuesday where Chief Minister and Mizo National Front chief Zoramthanga exuded confidence saying his party will win more seats that the 21-majority mark.
The voting process in the northeastern state went peacefully, with over 77 per cent of 8.57 lakh electors exercising their franchise, officials said.
Central Mizoram's Serchhip recorded the highest polling percentage of 84.49, followed by Hnahthial (84.16) and Khawzawl (82.39) while the lowest turnout was recorded in Aizawl district, 73.09 per cent.
The Ruling Mizo National Front, the main opposition Zoram People's Movement, and Congress fielded candidates on all the 40 seats to the Mizoram Legislative Assembly while Bharatiya Janata Party nominated candidates on 23 seats and Aam Aadmi Party contested on four assembly constituencies. 27 Independent candidates were also in the fray.
Polling in three states is yet to take place including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana.
Rajasthan will go to polls for its 200-member Legislative Assembly on November 25, while voting for 230-member Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly will take place on November 17. Voters in Telangana will seat the fate of their candidates on November 30. All these polls would be held in a single phase and the votes will be counted on December 3.
