'Ajit Pawar Can Become CM': Chhagan Bhujbal Amid Suspense Over Mahayuti Pick For Top Post — WATCH
Maharashtra Govt Formation: NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal suggested Ajit Pawar as a potential Chief Minister pick, but emphasised that the decision will be made jointly by the three parties in the Mahayuti.
Maharashtra Govt Formation: Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal has positioned party President Ajit Pawar as a contender for the Chief Minister post while he said that the three parties in the Mahayuti alliance—NCP, BJP, and Shiv Sena—will jointly decide on the candidate for the Chief Minister’s post. The remark comes after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) elected its president, Ajit Pawar, as the leader of the legislative party during a meeting chaired by NCP state president and Lok Sabha MP Sunit Tatkare.
In addition, Anil Patil was reappointed as the chief whip, responsible for overseeing the attendance of legislators and managing their requests to speak during sessions.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Bhujbal said, “All the three parties will sit together and decide who will be our leader. We three parties will sit together and decide who will become the CM, Ajit Pawar can also become the CM, his strike rate is very good. Today all our MLAs came to the meeting, many council members also came, and everyone has decided that Ajit Pawar will lead us in the Vidhan Sabha. But who will be the CM, we three parties will decide together…”

Maharashtra Election Results: Chief Minister Post Elusive For Ajit Pawar
The NCP’s strong performance in the Maharashtra state assembly elections has bolstered Ajit Pawar’s position within the alliance. NCP, part of the Mahayuti alliance with BJP and Shiv Sena, secured 233 out of 288 seats, with NCP winning 41 of the 59 seats it contested. The party outperformed the rival NCP (SP) faction, securing 29 seats from them.
Ajit Pawar, who has served as the deputy chief minister multiple times, has been a key figure in the state’s politics. Despite his continued desire to become the Chief Minister, the position remains elusive. His victory in Baramati, where he defeated his nephew Yugendra Pawar by over one lakh votes, further cemented his position as a strong political leader in Maharashtra.
Having been a significant player in the state since the 1980s, Ajit Pawar’s political career has seen both triumphs and controversies. His decision to field his wife, Sunetra Pawar, against cousin Supriya Sule in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections resulted in a defeat for her, but Ajit Pawar’s grip on the Baramati assembly constituency remained secure in the latest polls, despite aggressive campaigning by Sharad Pawar.
Ajit Pawar’s political career has spanned several high-ranking roles, including minister for irrigation, water resources, and finance. His leadership of the NCP, particularly after splitting from his uncle Sharad Pawar in 2023, has positioned him as a key player in Maharashtra’s political future. However, the question of who will be the Chief Minister continues to hang in the balance, with Bhujbal’s comments indicating that the decision will be made collaboratively among the alliance partners.
