The race for the next chief minister in Karnataka was officially flagged off today with the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announcing the poll schedule in the state. The 224-member Karnataka Assembly will undergo an election on May 10 and the votes will be counted on May 13. The term of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly would end on May 24, 2023.
The gazette notification will be issued on April 13 and the last date for filing nominations will be April 20. The date for scrutiny of nominations has been set for April 21 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be April 24. Polling will take place on May 10 and the votes will be counted on May 13 and the entire poll process will be concluded by May 15.
The incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, is aiming to come back to power and has been stressing the Kannadiga issue and the recent decision to grant reservation to Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities by scrapping a religion-based reservation for the Muslim community.
Whereas Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) are trying to corner the BJP dispensation on the issue of corruption.
In the 2018 Karnataka Assembly Election, BJP had emerged as the largest party but could not form the government after being limited to 104 seats. The Congress along with JD(S) formed a post-poll alliance and came to power with HD Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister. But, after a series of defections, the government was toppled in 2019 and a new government was formed with BS Yediyurappa as the Chief Minister who stepped down from the post on July 26, 2021. Basavaraj Bommai then took over as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on July 28, 2021.
