‘Absolutely Shocking,’ Kejriwal Questions EC Over Delay In Poll Turnout Figures

Delhi Assembly elections: The poll turnout data is usually released on the same evening of the polls.

New Delhi: Several hours after Delhi completed the voting process for its 70-seat state assembly, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday questioned the Election Commission over the unusual delay in the release of the voter turnout data. Taking to Twitter the Delhi CM wrote: “Absolutely shocking. What is EC doing? Why are they not releasing poll turnout figures, several hours after polling?” Kejriwal was replying to a user who tweeted that the final poll turnout figure will be released by the poll body by Sunday evening. The data is usually released on the same evening of the polls. The last voting percentage given by the commission on Saturday night was 61.46 per cent. The voting in the national capital to elect a new government ended at 6 pm on Saturday. Talking to reporters, senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said that this is perhaps the first time in the country's history that the Election Commission is not ready to release voter turnout data. Meanwhile, the poll body issued a clarification over the delay. A statement released by the Commission said that there are 13000 polling centres in Delhi. First, the information is gathered at each polling station and then sent to the Election Commission. Then, the data is compiled and the final data is released. If re-elected, it will be a hat-trick for him from the seat, as well as in the Chief Minister's chair. Kejriwal on Saturday cast his vote along with his family, including his first-time voter son, saying he is hopeful of winning a third term in office. An exit poll conducted by ABP-CVoter on Saturday projected a clean sweep for Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party in the bitterly-fought Delhi Assembly Elections. The exit poll has predicted AAP to get between 49 to 63 seats in the 70-member House, where the majority mark is 36, though it may lose a few seats here and there. The poll of polls also predicted that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is all set to romp home with a second consecutive victory, prompting words of caution and triggering confidence from political leaders. The results for the Delhi Assembly polls for 70 seats will be out on February 11.
