World University Rankings 2025: Oxford Tops Global List, IISc Remains Best University In India

World University Rankings 2025: Oxford holds on to the top spot for the ninth consecutive year.

World University Rankings 2025: The University of Oxford continues to hold the top position in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025 for the 9th consecutive year. The latest rankings also feature Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and the University of Cambridge in the top five. This year, Times Higher Education has ranked more than 2,000 institutions from 115 countries and territories.

THE World University Rankings 2025 assess research-focused institutions across five key criteria: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry income.

In India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore retained the top position but dropped out of the top 250 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, placing in the 251-300 range. Anna University, based in Chennai, rose to the second spot in India. Other Indian universities such as Mahatma Gandhi University (Kerala) and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences climbed into the 401-500 range.

Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences also made a significant leap from the 601-800 band to the top 500. None of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) made it to the top 500, though IIT Indore secured a spot in the 501-600 range, sharing the rank with Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and the University of Petroleum Studies (UPES).
