All schools in Bihar’s capital city Patna, will be further closed till June 28, 2023. Patna district magistrate released an order on Saturday, June 24, announcing the extension period for the closure of schools in the district, in the wake of the steady heatwave prevailing across the district as well as some other parts of Bihar in the past few days. Under the light of the fresh order of the Patna district administration, all schools in the district including private schools, government schools as well as anganwari centres. 

“​​In continuation to the order vide memo no.-8534/L dated 16.06.2023, it has been made to appear to me that due to prevalent high temperature with high humidity in the district, health and life of children are at Risk. Therefore, I, Dr. Chandra Shekhar Singh, District Magistrate, Patna under Section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 do hereby prohibit the academic activities of all the Private and Government schools (Including Pre-school and Anganwari Centers) of Patna District up to Class- XII till 28.06.2023. The order as mentioned above will come into force w.e.f. 26.06.2023, and will remain effective till 28.06.2023,” reads the official order in this regard. 

Notably, in the past few weeks, strong heat waves have been sweeping several states across the country forcing state and district administrations to close down schools and other educational institutions. Earlier last week on June 19, 2023, the Madhya Pradesh government extended the summer vacation in Madhya Pradesh schools for classes 1 to 5, and revised the school operational timings for classes 6 to 12. Earlier on June 17, the Patna district administration extended the closure of schools in Patna district till June 24. Schools in Patna were initially ordered to be closed from June 12 to June 18, 2023.
