New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday approved the demands of MPs from southern states for conducting bank recruitment exams in local language. She announced that the recruitment examination for Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), which is conducted by Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), will be conducted in 13 languages other than English and Hindi. Sitharaman announced this today while she presented the Economic Survey 2018-19 in Parliament. The examination will now be conducted in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Nirmala Sitharaman took to Twitter and wrote, "To provide a level playing field & to expand employment possibilities for local youths, it has been decided that examination for direct recruitment of officers (Scale-I)& Office Assistant in RRBs will be conducted in 13 regional languages in addition to English & Hindi." The issue was earlier raised by G C Chandrasekhar of the Congress through a Zero Hour mention where he had said the Indian Banking Service examination and other recruitment tests should be held in Kannada language alongside English and Hindi for the convenience of local aspirants. Responding to concerns raised by Chandrasekhar, Sitharaman had said MPs from Lok Sabha too had met on the issue which relates to all states which have their own language. "The matter is of serious concern," she had said. "I am seized of the matter. I will look into it and come back to the House." she had added.
