10 Cops Injured, Vehicles Damaged In Stone-Pelting, Clash During Muharram Procession In West Delhi
Around 10 personnel received minor injuries and some police vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting during a Muharram procession in west Delhi's Nangloi.
A section of people during a Muharram procession pelted stones at police and clashed with them, injuring about 10 personnel and damaging several vehicles, the police said. The clash occurred after the participants were stopped from changing the designated route in west Delhi's Nangloi, news agency PTI reported officials as informing. The police baton-charged the "unruly crowd" to disperse it, they said. Some purported videos of the incident were also circulated on social media that showed stone-pelting causing damage to public vehicles.
"Several 'tazia' processions were being carried out in Nagloi area and around eight to ten thousand people participated in them. One or two organisers became unruly and tried to divert their procession route which was earlier decided," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Harendra Singh said, as quoted by PTI.
"When police objected to it, they started pelting stones at police personnel. In order to control them, police resorted to a mild lathicharge and dispersed them from the area," he added.
As per the police, around 10 personnel received minor injuries and some police vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting. The situation in the area is under control, they said, as per PTI.
In one of the videos circulating on social media, police are seen lathi-charging the crowd amid the clash. In another video, commuters inside a bus were heard remarking how people were pelting stones at the vehicle.

Muslims take out "tazia" processions on Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD. "Tazia" is a miniature replica of the tomb of Imam Hussain.
