Maharashtra Couple Kills, Buries 18-Month-Old Daughter In Graveyard. Held Weeks Later After Tip-Off

The couple had murdered their 18-month-old daughter on March 18 and buried her in a local graveyard in Thane. The reason behind the murder is still unknown.

A husband-wife duo was arrested on Wednesday weeks after allegedly killing their 18-month-old daughter and burying her in a graveyard in Thane, Maharashtra. The couple had murdered her more than three weeks ago but the crime was brought to light after an anonymous letter tipped off the police officials about the crime, news agency PTI reported citing an official.

Following the tip-off the police exhumed the child's decomposed body and arrested the couple- Jahid Sheikh (38) and his wife Noorami (28). 

"The couple who reside at Mumbra in the city were arrested on Wednesday for the murder that occurred on March 18," the police official stated.

Senior insepctor of the Mumbra police station, Anil Shinde said, "The police recently received an anonymous letter about the couple killing their child, Labiba, and quietly burying the body in the graveyard."

Taking cognisance of the incident, the police launched a probe and detained the couple. Although the accused duo did not cooperate initially, but later they told the police how they committed the crime, the report stated.

"However, they did not reveal the motive behind the killing," senior inspector Shinde said.

The autopsy report confirmed that the child had suffered injuries on her head and other body parts as well. 

The couple has been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) was registered with the police.

Inspector (crime) S A Dawne stated that the couple was produced before a magistrate on April 10 and has been remanded in police custody till April 15, PTI reported.

4-Year-Old Kidnapped For Ransom In Delhi

A man allegedly kidnapped and later killed the 4-year-old daughter of his neighbour in west Delhi's Moti Nagar, PTI reported on Tuesday.  The accused, identified as Ajit Kumar, was arrested on Tuesday evening.

He demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh from his neighbours for releasing their daughter, a day after he kidnapped her. She was playing outside her home when he abducted her. The accused told the police during interrogation that he had killed the girl and kept her body in a polybag.
