Mumbai: Woman Dead, 4 Others Injured After Speeding Tempo Runs Over Them In Ghatkopar, Driver Detained

The injured were immediately admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment and the tempo driver has been detained by the police.

A 35-year-old woman was killed and four others sustained injuries after a speeding tempo ran over five people in Mumbai's Ghatkopar West on Friday.

The incident took place in Ghatkopar area's Chirag Nagar at 6:30 PM after the driver lost control of the vehicle, news agency PTI reported. The deceased has been identified as Priti Patel.

The tempo driver Uttam Baban Kharat has been detained by the police and the tempo has been seized, Mumbai Police said. The injured women were immediately admitted to Rajawadi hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses stated the tempo driver looked like he was in an inebriated condition when he was found. His blood samples have been collected for tests, an official from the Ghatkopar police station told PTI.

Police have taken the driver in their custody and will produce him before a court on Saturday. They are also investigating if he was under the influence of alcohol.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the driver told the police that he suffered an epileptic fit due to which he lost control of the steering, resulting in the accident.

The report also stated taht the locals at the spot told police that the driver's body movements looked  like he had suffered a fit. Police are verifying the claims.

"Prima facie, it appears that the accused lost control of the steering plus the road on which the accident took place is narrow," a police officer said.

The injured women include a 23-year-old Reshma Shaikh who fractured her left tibia, another woman named Mahrufa Shaikh who received a blunt trauma to the chest, and a third woman Taufa Shaikh who injured her upper lip.
