CISF Recorded Lowest Suicides In Six Years In 2024
This tragedy comes shortly after the CISF announced that it recorded the lowest number of suicides among its personnel in 2024, with 15 cases — a significant reduction compared to previous years. According to PTI, official data reveals that the force, which has an operational strength of over 1.51 lakh personnel, saw 15 suicides in 2024, equating to 9.86 per lakh. This was a notable drop from the 25 suicides reported in 2023, 26 in 2022, 21 in 2021, 18 in 2020, and 17 in 2019.
A CISF spokesperson credited the reduction to various proactive measures taken to address the mental health issues faced by its personnel. These measures include personalised engagement with officers, stress management activities such as yoga and games, online grievance redressal, and tele-counselling on mental health issues for 4,200 personnel. The spokesperson also noted that the new transfer and posting policy aims to ensure better work-life balance for non-gazetted rank officials, who make up nearly 98 per cent of the CISF workforce, as per PTI.
According to the spokesperson, the CISF's suicide rate of 9.87 per lakh in 2024 is over 40 per cent lower than the 2023 rate and marks the first time in five years that the CISF's suicide rate has fallen below the national average. The national suicide rate, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, stood at 12.4 per lakh in 2022.
The CISF, under the Union Home Ministry, is responsible for guarding 359 units across India, including 68 civil airports, historical monuments like the Taj Mahal and Red Fort, the Delhi Metro, Parliament House, and several government and private installations, in addition to securing a number of VVIPs.
The CISF has pledged continued support to its personnel to ensure their well-being and mental health.
