Lost Your Aadhaar? Here’s Quickest Way To Recover It Without Visiting A Center

UIDAI’s tech-driven approach ensures that individuals and businesses can retrieve their Aadhaar details instantly, without any bureaucratic delays

In a country where Aadhaar has become the backbone of identity verification, from banking to mobile connections, tax filings to government subsidies, losing the physical card can feel like a major setback. But the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has eliminated the need for frantic paperwork or in-person visits with a fully digital recovery system.

The days when people had to wait in long queues at enrollment centers or submitting physical documents for a reprint are gone. UIDAI’s tech-driven approach ensures that individuals and businesses can retrieve their Aadhaar details instantly, without any bureaucratic delays. Whether you need it for a last-minute KYC requirement or simply want a backup, the authority offers multiple secure, self-service options—all accessible from your smartphone or computer.

Here’s how you can recover your lost Aadhaar card digitally:

1. Online Retrieval via UIDAI Portal

  • Visit uidai.gov.in and navigate to 'Retrieve Lost UID/EID'

  • Provide your registered mobile number

  • Enter the captcha verification

  • Receive your Aadhaar number via SMS

2. Download e-Aadhaar

  • Access the 'Download Aadhaar' section on the UIDAI website

  • Use your Aadhaar number or Virtual ID (VID)

  • Verify with OTP sent to registered mobile

3. mAadhaar Mobile App Solution

  • Official app available on Android/iOS stores

  • Stores digital copy of Aadhaar

  • Enables biometric locking feature for security

4. SMS-Based Recovery

  • Send SMS to 1947 in format: GETUID <14-digit Enrollment Number>

  • Receive details via reply SMS

For Physical Reprint:

  • Visit nearest Aadhaar Enrollment Center

  • Submit mandatory information such as your name, gender, district or PIN code as per your Aadhaar enrollment.

  • Undergo biometric authentication using a single fingerprint or iris scan.
  • New card dispatched within 15 working days

It will cost you Rs. 30 for this service.

UIDAI confirms that digitally downloaded Aadhaar carries equal validity as the physical card for all verification purposes. The authority recommends keeping your Enrollment ID (received during registration) handy as it simplifies the recovery process.
