Shaadi.Com's Anupam Mittal Says Being Laid Off Early In Career ‘Was Best Thing That Could’ve Happened To Him’
Mittal called the layoff ‘the best thing’ that could have happened to him, as it resulted in him launching the matrimonial site Shaadi.com
Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal recently shared how failure early on in his career helped him immensely. The Shark Tank India judge revealed that he was let go off early in his career when he was working in the US.
Mittal called the layoff ‘the best thing’ that could have happened to him, as it resulted in him launching the matrimonial site Shaadi.com, reported Moneycontrol. Speaking in an interview with Himesh Madaan on his YouTube channel, the People Group founder and CEO said, “My career was on steroids. I was a multi-millionaire in my early 20s. I got fired from my job. And that’s when I started Shaadi.com. I was gutted when I was laid off. But it was the best thing that could’ve happened to me.”
The entrepreneur was referring to his job at MicroStrategy where he was given stock options. The firm was worth $100 million at the time and reached a valuation of $40 billion in the next three years, owing to the dot com boom.

During the Barbershop podcast earlier this year, Mittal said, “I had joined as a sales consultant but very quickly I rose through ranks to become the director of strategic partnerships so I had a lot of stock options and had become a multi-millionaire in my early twenties. It was crazy, I’d never imagined it. I’d ordered a sports car, we used to party in stadiums, our corporate parties would be on cruise ships. It was next level.”
The businessman shared that he continues to take risks today and has turned down offers as high as Rs 800 crore.
