Celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm, Chhath is particularly significant in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. This unique festival spans four days of rituals and devotions, where devotees express gratitude to the Sun for sustaining life on Earth. Chhath Puja involves a series of traditional practices, including rigorous fasting, holy bathing, and offering prayers during sunrise and sunset. The festival not only holds cultural and religious importance but also symbolises purity, discipline, and environmental harmony. According to the calendar, Chhath Parv is celebrated on the sixth day of Kartik Shukla Paksha. However, the festival commences with nahay-khay on the fourth day, and the fast is concluded on the seventh day.
Chhath Puja 2023 Dates:
Chhath Puja lasts for four days, and the observers observe a Nirjala fast for 36 hours. Therefore, Chhath Vrat is considered one of the challenging fasts. This year, Chhath Puja begins on November 17, 2023. On this day, devotees will start the Chhath Puja with nahay-khay. Meanwhile, on November 20, the Chhath Puja will conclude with Usha Arghya and Parana.

Chhath Puja Day 4: Puja Vidhi
- The fourth day of Chhath Puja is very significant. On this day, the rising sun is offered arghya (obeisance). Learn the method of offering arghya to the rising sun on this day.
- On this day, the sunrise will occur at 6:47 am on 20th November. Perform the puja with proper rituals on this day. While offering arghya to Lord Surya, ensure that your face is towards the east.
- Take special care that when offering arghya, always use a copper vessel.
- When offering water to Lord Surya, hold the water vessel with both hands. It is considered auspicious to see the rays falling on the water stream while offering arghya to the sun.
- Remember to put akshat (uncooked rice) and a red-colored flower in the water vessel during the Usha Arghya. Do not offer arghya to the sun without these.
Chhath Puja 2024: Date And Time
Chhath Puja in 2024 will commence on November 5, 2024. On this day, the resolution for Chhath will be taken along with ritual bathing and feasting. Subsequently, on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, fasting will take place. The evening arghya will be offered on November 7, and the concluding morning arghya will take place on November 8, 2024.
On Thursday, November 7, 2024, the evening arghya will be offered until 05:31 PM, while on November 8, 2024, the morning arghya can be offered until 06:38 AM.
Types Of Vermillion Applied During Chhath
Chhath Puja 2023: Chhath is a special festival where sindoor (vermilion) is applied and offered. Let's find out which colour of sindoor to apply and offer during this festival.
The Chhath festival is celebrated on the sixth day of the Kartik month. During this festival, worship is offered to Chhathi Maiya and Lord Surya. Women apply yellow sindoor during this period.
Special clay sindoor, especially matiya sindoor, is used for offering during Chhath Puja. This sindoor is of high-quality clay.
During Chhath Puja, married women apply sindoor on their noses. It is believed that the length of the sindoor is directly proportional to the husband's longevity.
In Hinduism, sindoor is considered a symbol of 'sau bhagya' (good fortune). The tradition of applying sindoor has been followed since ancient times, and it is also associated with Goddess Parvati and Goddess Sita.

During Chhath Puja, women who observe the fast adorn the hairline of another married woman with this sindoor. Matiya sindoor is of pink color and is predominantly used during the puja.
