Hyderabad: The centuries-old art form Kalamkari will be on display along the Rajpath in Delhi on the occasion of Republic Day.

India’s freedom movement against the British witnessed an overwhelming participation of people throughout the country. Many freedom fighters struggled relentlessly and sacrificed their lives to protect the dignity of their motherland.

There are many Telugu patriots who took part in this struggle. Sudhir and his team from Kalahasthi, Chittoor district, gave life to such a movement. The iconic art, which brought them to life, has been selected for the Republic Day celebrations on the Delhi Rajpath.

On the occasion of Republic Day on January 26, the Centre is preparing for a huge scroll exhibition of 750 meters in length at the National Gallery of Modern Arts on the Delhi Rajpath. Against this background, it was decided to display paintings by 500 artists across the country.

The beautiful painting by Sudhir and his team has been selected for the Modern Art Gallery in Delhi from the Common Telugu States. They Include Alluri Sitaramaraj, Potti Sriramulu, Tanguturi Prakasham Panthulu, Gauthu Lachanna, Pingali Venkaiah, Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, Gottipati Brahmaiah, Acharya NG Ranga, Kalluri Chandramouli, Kaneganti Hanumanthu.

Kalamkari is a hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile. There are two distinctive styles of Kalamkari art in India –the Srikalahasti style and the Machilipatnam style. The Srikalahasti style of Kalamkari, where the "kalam" or pen is used for freehand drawing of the subject and filling in the colours, is entirely hand worked. Only natural dyes are used in Kalamkari, which involves twenty-three steps.
