Provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution, which accorded special powers to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, were abrogated by the Narendra Modi-led NDA government in August last year. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on 5 August 2019, announced the NDA government’s proposal to revoke Article 370, and proposed the bifurcation of the J&K into two Union territories – Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
