Your WhatsApp Status Just Got a Soundtrack: Here's How To Add Music

If you’re using WhatsApp Business, note that your music library may be limited.

WhatsApp is tuning up its Status feature, now allowing users to add music to photo and video updates. Whether you’re sharing a travel reel or a moment of reflection, you can now match it with the perfect song.

Music Meets Status Updates

The new update brings an audio layer to your visual stories. Users can now overlay music on photos or videos shared via Status, making updates more expressive and engaging. You can include up to 15 seconds of music on an image, while videos can carry background music for up to 60 seconds — the full length of the clip.

However, this music feature is exclusive to photo and video statuses. Text, GIFs, and voice notes remain unaffected and won’t support music (for now).

How To Add Music to Your WhatsApp Status

Adding music is seamless:

  • Go to the Updates tab.
  • Select a photo or video, or tap Camera to capture something new.
  • Tap the music note icon to open the music browser.
  • Use the search bar to look up a track by song, artist, or keyword, or simply browse through trending tunes.
  • Tap the play icon to preview a track, or directly add it to your status.
  • Use the progress bar to select the portion of the song you want.
  • Tap the centre of the screen to switch the music sticker’s appearance.
  • Tap Done.

You can then drag and resize the music sticker as needed. Want to make edits? Just tap the sticker again to return to the music editor.

Alternatively, tap the sticker icon > Music to access the music browser instantly. If you come across a musical Status from someone else, tap the music sticker and select Add status with music to use the same track.

Limitations for WhatsApp Business Profiles

If you’re using WhatsApp Business, note that your music library may be limited. “To make sure the music in our licensed library is not used for commercial purposes, we restrict access to licensed music for business accounts,” WhatsApp stated.

That means fewer song choices for businesses, keeping personal and commercial use clearly separated.

This new feature turns Status updates into more than just visual snapshots — now they can carry a mood, a vibe, and a beat. Whether it's a chill tune or a party anthem, your updates just found their rhythm.
