Twitter May Remove All Legacy Verifications As Old Blue Ticks, Including Musk's, Say 'May Or May Not Be Notable'

Twitter's verification system now shows a message on ‘legacy verified accounts’ that were verified under Twitter’s previous verification process, noting that these accounts ‘may or may not be notable’

Elon Musk's latest update to Twitter's verification system now shows a message on ‘legacy verified accounts’ that were verified under Twitter’s previous verification process, noting that these accounts ‘may or may not be notable,’ including on Twitter CEO Elon Musk's account.

It has replaced the previous label that said that accounts that were genuinely verified by Twitter were ‘notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category.’

Twitter Blue badge is now a part of the Twitter Blue subscription which means that users can get the blue tick on their profile after subscribing to a monthly fee of $8 on the web and $11 on iPhones.

The Blue badge typically means that your profile is authentic and active. Previously, the Twitter Blue badge was only available to notable personalities, and users had to provide their work for verification. All old verified profiles will also have to subscribe to a monthly subscription to retain the Blue badge.

Clicking on the blue tick next to accounts earlier said the account was verified as it was "notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category."

It got later defined as "legacy verification" suggesting that many of these users were never actually notable, despite having to meet a list of criteria set by the company.

Many blue checkmark users are witnessing a pop-up when they click on their blue checkmark that reads, “This is a legacy verified account. It may or may not be notable.”

Musk on Monday tweeted that "in a few months, we will remove all legacy blue checks. The way in which they were given out was corrupt and nonsensical."

The revamped version of Twitter Blue came after a spate of subscribers using the paid service started impersonating well-known accounts. Twitter Blue has been made available for users where check marks in a blue badge next to their profile pictures allow users to edit tweets, among other perks.

Twitter said it will take “a number of other steps to detect and prevent impersonation,” including a requirement that users have a valid phone number attached to their account. Users who change their user name or photo will also lose their check mark “until those changes are reviewed by Twitter.”

Users who don’t pay for Twitter Blue will lose their verification badges “in a few months,” Musk tweeted Monday even as he made similar comments earlier.
