Truecaller Joins Hands With Microsoft To Let Assistant AI Answer Calls In Their Own Voice

Under the collaboration, Truecaller will use Microsoft Azure's Personal Voice technology. This will enable the AI Assistant to mimic the user's voice when screening calls or responding on their behalf.

Truecaller, the world's most-popular caller identification app, is partnering with software giant Microsoft to significantly upgrade its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Assistant. Under the collaboration, Truecaller will use Microsoft Azure's Personal Voice technology. This will enable the AI Assistant to mimic the user's voice when screening calls or responding on their behalf. The feature is being rolled out starting today (May 22) and will initially be available in a select few countries. There is no official word on its availability in India.

Truecaller has confirmed plans to expand the feature to more countries soon.

"Truecaller is proud to announce a partnership with Microsoft to utilise the new Personal Voice technology from Microsoft Azure AI Speech. Truecaller’s AI Assistant, first introduced Sep 2022, already incorporates a multitude of AI technologies that can automatically answer phone calls for you, screen calls, take messages, respond on your behalf, or record the call for your later viewing," Truecaller made the announcement through a community post.

"With the addition of Microsoft’s Personal Voice, users of the Truecaller Assistant can now create a completely digital version of their own voice to use inside the Assistant. This means that if you already have Assistant on your Truecaller app, you can have your callers hear a replicated and authentic version of your voice instead of one of the many digital assistants on offer," the company added.

How To Set Up Personal Voice In AI Assistant In Truecaller

  •  Note that this feature is available only to Truecaller Premium subscribers. You’ll need to buy a subscription to use it.
  •  Ensure you are on the latest version of the app by updating it.
  • Open the app and navigate to Settings.
  • Go to Assistant Settings.
  • Select Set Up Personal Voice and follow the instructions.
  • You will need to record your voice for about a minute, speaking the words shown on the screen. Once completed, your AI-generated voice replication will be ready.
  • The company is the early access partner for Personal Voice and a working demo for this new feature has just been showcased at the Microsoft Build conference in Seattle.

Earlier, Truecaller offered a limited selection of voices for the AI Assistant, meaning callers would hear one of these preset voices before the user picked up. This could sometimes catch callers off guard. To address this issue, the caller identification service is introducing Personal Voice, allowing users to utilise their own voice for the AI Assistant.

With the new Personal Voice feature from Microsoft Azure AI Speech in Truecaller, consumers will be able to record a few seconds of their own voice to create a digital voice, while setting up Truecaller Assistant.
