When Will OpenAI Launch GPT-5? The Release Date Is Closer Than You Think

OpenAI is reportedly planning to release GPT‑5 soon, aiming for a model that integrates multiple technologies and handles diverse tasks. Here's a breakdown of what may be coming next.

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company supported by Microsoft, is reportedly gearing up to release its next-generation model, GPT‑5, as early as August. According to a report from The Verge, which cites sources familiar with the matter, the upcoming launch could mark a major shift in how the company approaches AI integration across its platforms.

The model was initially expected to go live during the summer, and while August remains the target window, OpenAI has previously adjusted timelines based on a range of internal and external factors.

Merging Technologies for a Unified System

GPT‑5 is anticipated to represent more than just a routine upgrade. The Verge report notes that OpenAI’s plan is to position the new model as a system combining several distinct technologies into one comprehensive platform. Rather than functioning as a single AI model, GPT‑5 is expected to operate as a collection of models tailored for varied tasks.

CEO Sam Altman had previously indicated this move in February, outlining OpenAI’s aim to simplify its offering by integrating its o3 model with the broader GPT architecture.

A Step Towards a Versatile AI Framework

“The startup ultimately aims to merge the o-series and GPT-series models as it looks to create AI systems that can utilise all available tools and handle a variety of tasks,” The Verge reported. This shift would make the AI system more flexible, possibly allowing for better reasoning, multitasking, and use of different tools within a single ecosystem.

Release Date Could Still Shift

Although an August debut appears likely, there are still uncertainties. “While GPT‑5 looks likely to debut in early August, OpenAI’s planned release dates often shift to respond to development challenges, server capacity issues, or even rival AI model announcements and leaks,” according to the report.

The official timeline and full capabilities of GPT‑5 remain under wraps, but industry watchers are keenly awaiting updates, particularly around performance, access, and potential pricing.
