GPT-4.1 Lands In ChatGPT: Meet The AI That Codes Better & Costs Less

While GPT-4.1 takes the spotlight, the GPT-4.1 mini model isn’t far behind in terms of performance. According to OpenAI, it surpasses GPT-4o in multiple intelligence benchmarks.

OpenAI is supercharging its flagship chatbot with new AI brains. The company has confirmed that its high-performance GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models—until now limited to API users—are being integrated into ChatGPT, offering improved coding capabilities and smarter instruction handling.

GPT-4.1 Arrives in ChatGPT for Power Users

Announcing the rollout in a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI revealed that users on the ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans can now find the GPT-4.1 model in the “more models” dropdown. Positioned as a more capable alternative to the o3 model, GPT-4.1 is being marketed primarily for its proficiency in coding and following detailed instructions.

OpenAI isn’t stopping there. In the coming weeks, subscribers on ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu plans will also receive access to the new model lineup. For users on the free tier, the company is preparing to swap the existing GPT-4o mini with the GPT-4.1 mini—an upgrade that promises noticeable improvements.

Stronger Benchmarks, Smarter AI

GPT-4.1 family intelligence by latency

When OpenAI launched the GPT-4.1 series via its API earlier, it shared that internal testing showed the models surpassing previous iterations like GPT-4o and GPT-4.5 in coding performance. Notably, the GPT-4.1 model scored 54.6 per cent on the SWE-bench Verified benchmark, a metric that evaluates software engineering task performance.

It also notched a score of 38.3 per cent on the MultiChallenge benchmark, which assesses how well models can follow complex instructions. For multimodal tasks involving long-context understanding, GPT-4.1 earned a 72 per cent on the Video-MME benchmark. These numbers underscore OpenAI’s focus on expanding both the depth and flexibility of its AI tools.

Mini Model, Major Gains

While GPT-4.1 takes the spotlight, the GPT-4.1 mini model isn’t far behind in terms of performance. According to OpenAI, it surpasses GPT-4o in multiple intelligence benchmarks despite being a “mini” version. It boasts reduced latency—cut in half, the company says—and is significantly more affordable, costing 83 per cent less than GPT-4o.

“Mini” doesn’t mean minimal impact, especially for developers and users looking for a faster, cheaper, and smarter alternative.

With this rollout, OpenAI continues its push to bring cutting-edge AI capabilities to more users, closing the gap between API-level tools and consumer-facing applications. Whether you're coding, querying, or simply curious, GPT-4.1 might just be the upgrade ChatGPT needed.
