India celebrates its 77th year of independence today and the tech giant Google has joined the festivities with a captivating doodle that pays homage to the country's diverse textile legacy. The special doodle, created by renowned artist Namrata Kumar, showcases textiles from 21 distinct regions, forming a captivating patchwork narrative. Drawing inspiration from India's rich textile traditions, Namrata Kumar has ingeniously woven together a vibrant tapestry of 'swatches' from various corners of the nation. Each 'swatch' in the artwork represents a different weaving technique, ranging from the intricate Kutch embroidery of Gujarat to the refined 'ikat' work of Odisha. The detailed 'Pashmina kani' woven textile of Jammu and Kashmir and the elegant 'Kasavu' weave of Kerala also find their place in this textile mosaic.
The Google Doodle portrays these 'swatches' in a harmonious textile grid, with the letters of 'GOOGLE' meticulously embroidered at its centre. In a statement shared on the Google Doodle portal, the artist shared her research journey, where she identified and meticulously researched the diverse textile crafts that exist throughout India.
Namrata Kumar explained, "My intention was to represent a wide array of techniques, including embroidery, different weaving methods, printing styles, resist-dyeing processes, hand-painted textiles, and more. I aimed to ensure a balanced representation of India's geographical regions."
