Google Maps Brings Time Machine Feature To Show What Your Locality Looked Like In The Past

The time travel feature allows you to “travel back in time and see what your neighbourhood looked like decades ago.”

Google strives to continuously enhance the overall user experience and as a sign of its dedication to this cause, it keeps on releasing new features and updates. The tech giant has now attempted to improve the user experience of Google Maps users. Google Maps in a blog post has announced that it is now getting a new feature that allows you to “travel back in time and see what your neighbourhood looked like decades ago.” As per Google, some of the aerial and satellite imagery even goes as far back as 80 years.

The blog post further highlights that in cities such as Berlin, London, Paris, and Warsaw, users can access historical imagery that dates back as far as the 1930s. This offers a unique perspective on how these iconic cities have evolved over the decades. Additionally, Google Earth has made significant strides in enhancing the platform's usability, particularly for researchers and organisations. The company is focused on simplifying access to its vast collection of geographical data, making it more accessible for academic projects, environmental studies, and other research-driven initiatives. By doing so, Google Earth aims to support a wide range of projects that require historical or geographical insights.

Other Features

Google is also expanding the Street View feature. The Street View feature, which now boasts an impressive collection of over 280 billion images captured by cars and trekkers, is set to receive one of its largest updates to date, expanding its coverage to nearly 80 countries. From the scenic landscapes of Bosnia to the ancient villages of Europe and the sandy dunes of Namibia, users will have even more fascinating locations to explore.

In addition to these exciting updates, Google also revealed enhancements to satellite imagery on Google Earth and Maps. Leveraging the Cloud Score+ AI model, trained on millions of images, the platform will now offer a "brighter, more vibrant globe" by intelligently removing cloud shadows, haze, and mist for a clearer view. Recently, Google Maps introduced new navigation features that assist users in locating EV charging stations and allow them to book metro tickets in select Indian cities.
