New Delhi: Launched in 2012, Apple Maps quickly turned into the default map app for iPhone users worldwide. However, Apple Maps was initially not very well received as it was riddled with some issues that included incorrect labelling. The iPhone maker has since introduced major upgrades and improvements and the new iOS 15 brings a significant overhaul to the overall experience. The new Apple Maps provide 3D experience with a considerable amount of visual details, improved accuracy and many quality-of-life upgrades, according to David Dorn, product lead, and Meg Frost, design lead, at Apple Maps and explained why it is better than its competitors, says a new report.

According to, Frost the company expanded the improvements to directions and navigations in the new Apple Maps and brought changes that apply to walking, biking, driving, and taking public transit, says a report published in CNN.

“Before the new map, we had a two-dimensional product and we really had a flat representation of the world. So we took the opportunity to create a realistic globe that accurately represents the sizes of countries in 3D,” Frost was quoted as saying by CNN.

Among other additions, the Cupertino, California-based tech giant has included a 3D globe and 3D landmarks to Apple Maps in the new iOS 15. According to Frost, the globe "accurately represents the size of countries," and added that the attention to detail to 3D landmarks extends to properly coloured lighting on certain buildings.

Earlier in August, Apple started expanding on the native Apple Maps review functionality that it first introduced in iOS 14, thus, allowing users in the US to review places of interest, restaurants and other locations. In the Apple Maps app in iOS 14 and iOS 15, users were given the option to to provide a thumbs up or thumbs down for most locations.
