TN Student Death: Notice Issued To School For Hiring 64-Year-Old Driver After Student Crushed Under Van
The preliminary inquiry revealed that the accident took place at the blind spot and the driver did not have an assistant near him.
Chennai: A Class 2 student died on Monday after a school van that dropped him at his school ran over him while reversing the vehicle in Alwarthirunagar of Chennai. Based on the incident, the police issued a notice to the school seeking responses for appointing a driver over 60 years of age and the absence of an assistant to help with the reversing of the vehicle.
According to a report on IANS, the deceased boy identified as Deekshith was a Class 2 student of Sree Venkateshwara Matriculation School in Alwarthirunagar.
On Monday, the driver Poongavanam dropped the student at school and started off the bus. However, he failed to notice Deekshith who was walking behind the vehicle and started to reverse it. Later, he hit Deekshith.
The student was first rushed to a private hospital in Alwarthirunagar but he was sent to a hospital in Vadapalani where he was declared brought dead.

The Valasravakkam police sent the body of the student to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.
After the incident, the school was closed.

The police based on the complaint of the family members arrested van driver Poongavanam (64) and his assistant Gnanasakthi (38) under sections of IPC. The police also registered a case against Jaya Subhash, correspondent of the school and Dhanalakshmi, the headmistress.
The authorities have also issued a notice to the school demanding a response on why they appointed a 64-year-old driver without any safety concerns
