Tamil Nadu: Food Safety Officers Raid Several Eateries As Girl Dies After Eating Shawarma

In Madurai, the Food Safety Officer said that they inspected 90 shops and sealed two of them. They also confiscated 70 kg of chicken.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Minister Ma Subramanian had ordered to inspection of all hotels and shawarma joints across the state.

Food safety officers formed multiple teams and conducted raids at various shawarma shops in major cities across the state in the wake of the death of a 14-year-old girl after consuming shawarma in Namakkal. In Madurai district, the officials who raided several eateries confiscated 70 kgs of chicken and sealed two shops. In Tiruppur district, the officials confiscated 16 kg of contaminated chicken, 3.5 kg of rotten fish and issued notices to eight shops.

Jayarama Pandian, Food Safety Officer, Madurai said, "We inspected 90 shops & confiscated 70 kg of chicken. We have sealed two shops."

In Coimbatore, FSSAI officials inspected 36 restaurants and seized 12 kg of chicken, 1.5 kg of food colours, 4.5 kg of marinated chicken and 17.95 kg of cooked shawarma due to hygiene issues. The officials sent notices to six restaurants in the district, said a report on The Hindu.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Minister Ma Subramanian had ordered to inspection of all hotels and shawarma joints across the state.  

A14-year-old girl died on Monday and 43 other people who consumed shawarma and other food items from the same eatery over the weekend were also hospitalised in Namakkal district. Following this, Namakkal administration temporarily banned the consumption of shawarma and grilled chicken. The FSSAI has also been ordered to conduct inspections at restaurants across the district. 

The Collector said that the issue came to light after they were alerted that 11 students of Namakkal Medical College Hospital who consumed food at the same eatery were hospitalised on Saturday.
