Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji's Remand Extended Till August 8

Minister Senthil Balaji was recently shifted to Puzhal prison from a private hospital where he underwent heart surgery. 

Chennai City court extended the remand of arrested Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji till August 8. The order was passed on Wednesday since the remand term was set to end on July 26.

Principal Session Court Judge Alli extended the remand of Balaji. 

Earlier, the principal sessions court extended the remand of Senthil Balaji till July 26 after Justice CV Karthikeyan passed an interim order permitting the Principal Sessions judge to proceed with the hearing of the habeas corpus petition filed by the Minister's wife.

On Tuesday, Madras High Court closed the habeas corpus petition filed by Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji's wife Megala as the matter was pending before the Supreme Court. A division bench of justices J Nisha Banu and D Bharatha Chakravarthy closed the petition after hearing the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate and senior counsel NR Elango, who represented Balaji.

While closing the petition, Nisha Banu said, "Now we have nothing to say since the Supreme Court is seized of the matter." 

Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy said, "Yes, we will close the matter." 

Subsequently, the division bench closed the HCP.

Earlier, Supreme Court heard the pleas of Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji and his wife Megala challenging the July 14 order of the Madras High Court by which it upheld his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case. 

Balaji was recently shifted to the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai from a private hospital.

Tamil Nadu Minister was arrested in connection with cash-for-job scam by ED. The arrest was made after raids conducted by ED. However, the Minister complained of chest pain and he was shifted to a hospital.
