Jallikattu: Two Gored To Death By Bulls In Tamil Nadu

Marudha was among 53 people including 31 spectators and 22 bull tamers injured in the Jallikattu in Madurai district.

Two persons died after a jallikattu bull gored them to death in two different jallikattu events in Pudukottai and Madurai districts on Thursday. An 18-year-old boy died in the jallikattu conducted in Pudukottai district while another person identified as Marudha died in the state's first jallikattu event held in Madurai this year.

According to a report in Times of India, an 18-year-old suffered injuries in the abdomen after a bull ran amok and hurt him during a jallikattu event at Thatchankurichi on January 6. Later, he was shifted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. However, he died due to injuries on Thursday.

In another incident, R Marudha from Ambedkar Nagar in Madurai district accompanied his friend, a bull owner, to a jallikattu. While he was watching the event, a bull ran from vadivasal and hit him in the abdomen.

He was rushed to Thanjavur Government Medical College for treatment. However, he succumbed to the injuries.

He was among 53 people including 31 spectators and 22 bull tamers injured in the event.

Meanwhile, another 27-year-old man was gored to death while he was taking a jallikattu bull for a walk in Madurai district.

Jallikattu, a traditional bull-taming sport widely embraced in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is customarily conducted during the Pongal festival, a significant harvest celebration in the region. The term "Jallikattu" is a combination of Tamil words - "jalli" (signifying gold or silver coins) and "kattu" (meaning a package), alluding to the prize money affixed to the bulls' horns, serving as an enticement for participants. In the course of Jallikattu events, a bull is set loose among participants, who attempt to seize control of the bull by gripping its hump. The event is considered a test of courage and skill.
